The turtle is one of the oldest creatures on earth. Dating back 225 million years to the Triassic Period, it began roaming the land well before the dinosaur had arrived. For millions of years the two creatures shared the planet. However - unlike the dinosaur - the turtle survived the ecological and climatic changes that caused extinction.
In Native mythology, the turtle symbolizes inner strength, understanding and wisdom. When life becomes chaotic and we are rushing from one thing to the next, the turtle teaches us to slow down and to take the time to reflect and relax.
Slow and steady, the turtle grows old with grace and lives in harmony with its surroundings. It teaches us to go with the flow, to live in the moment and to try and enjoy the journey rather than the destination. Most importantly, it teaches us to go inside ourselves to examine and contemplate our lives.
Similarly, film offers a temporary repose from the everyday world and provides an opportunity for reflection and contemplation. It has the power to illuminate and enlighten by asking new questions and presenting a variety of different perspectives - allowing people to see and understand the world in new ways with new eyes.
